Hi there, I have dancing for just over a year now and have been a lifelong admirer of all things gothic, so I was so excited when our teacher announced we were to have a gothic themed dance night here in Belfast. I'm just preparing my routine now...have danced a solo once before but it was to Roots Manuva and Coldcut's True Skool so it was a sort of Egyptian/Indian mix. For my solo I have chosen to do a quite cabaret version of The Dresden Doll's My Alcoholic Friends. I was so inspired by Tempest's routine to Evil Night Together, it was dark yet witty, I hope to bring some of that to my performance.I'm just having some thoughts about costuming. I want to do an Amanda Palmer style look, but still keep it as something I could dance in and to make my moves look. There'll be lots of hip bumps, shoulder shimmies and other fast (but not hugely difficult moves). I was thinking of a corset style top, hotpats with a burlesque style bustle and maybe even Amanda style stripey stockings with heeled mary janes.

Any advice on costuming would be great, or any sites you can direct me to so I can be part of the punk cabaret, therefore achieving freedom ;)

The Dresden Dolls Present "Post-War Trade" and we need YOU, artists!

Hello Comrades:

In the many years of touring that I've done, one of the things i've been consistently impressed with is the high creative quality of the original artwork that people have brought to the shows in many forms. I can't tell you how many times i've seen someone with a handmade Dolls-inspired purse/shirt/lunchbox/duct-tape creation/thing and heard someone next to them say "you MADE that? can i PAY you to make ME one??"

so here it is, the age of over-inter-connectedness and the internet and it's time to change the world. I want to create an internet exchange forum in which really talented artists and artisans can directly reach out fans instead of posting photos their wares to the internet to get feedback. this is awesome but i would really like to see these artists making MONEY and doing BUSINESS with our fans. so it was that after years and years of discussion, the concept of Post-War Trade was born.

my good friend and fellow artist Katie Kay has agreed to take on the job of trying to organize this conceptual nightmare into a daydream reality, but we obviously can't do it without YOU. the main idea is to get as many artists and artisans as possible to submit their work, we will pick the stuff we think is amazing enough to be reproduced en masse, and the featured items will be sold on the net with the majority of the profit going back to the artist.

it's the DEMOCRATIC FUTURE OF MERCHANDISING! how AWESOME!!!!

it's like Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. fashion line without the.....horrible capitalist connotations? sweatshops? spandex?

no artist is too professional or amateur to get involved. ANYTHING GOES. that means anything. even spandex, for christ's sake!!!!
if you can make it, and we love it and think other people will love it, we will sell it.
so spread the word to all your artist and artisan friends. there's a lot more information about the nitty gritty, katie kay will get y'all informed further:

from Katie Kay:

Calling all designers, artists, craftspeople and anyone who has ever thought of being any of those!

The Dresden Dolls are happy to announce their latest project, /Post-War Trade./ After years of seeing the most amazing pieces of art come from fans, we felt the need to share with the world at large—it is just too beautiful to keep under wraps! The time has come to bridge the gap between artist and fan, making these lovely creations available to everyone.

We'd love to see your best work—everything from wallets to lampshades to pillowcases, large fine art to toothbrush holders, journals to tea-cozies, alligator-leashes to zebra-saddles. The sky is the limit, as long as it incorporates Dresden Dolls-inspired imagery, or the name of the new project, /Post-War Trade/. We will hand-select several pieces at a time, and each artist will have a biography and photo featured along with their listing, as well as a link to a personal website. Artists and products will be in rotation, each one being featured for 3-4 months per cycle. Payment will work on a consignment or percentage basis, depending on the situation. Post-War Trade will be responsible for all marketing, sales and shipping, with a check being issued to the artist at the end of their featured time. After we receive photos of possible items, potential artists will be asked to provide us with a high-quality sample and should be able to reproduce several of the item within an agreed upon period of time.

We are looking for every level of artist, fans of the band and people new to our world—from people newly creating to established, professional designers! Please pass this along to your favorite artists, friends or talented enemies.

*This is the official call for /Post-War Trade/ submissions!
Send photos/ sketches of your work to: postwartrade@dresdendolls.com

Deadline for our initial launch is September 10th, 2007.
If we select your item, you will be asked to mail in a sample, from there we will select the featured artists.
Quantities ordered will vary on an item-by-item basis, taking into account cost and time restraints.
Spread the word-- let's change the world of band merchandising, let's bring it into the hands of artists!

if you'd like more information or aren't sure about what this is all is or means, please email:postwartrade@dresdendolls.com
The application deadline for THE GREAT BOSTON BURLESQUE EXPOSITION is fast approaching. Don't let torpidity and hebetude stand in your way! Join the dozens of performers who have already applied for this fabulous event. Surely YOU belong in one of the following events:

Friday night (February 16) - The New England Showcase
Open to performers (troupes, duos, soloists; burlesque or boylesque) from one of the New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont). We'll even throw in a little upstate New York for good measure. **Hosted by the darling of Dusseldorf, Miss (Born in Boston, raised on The Rhine) Astrid!**

Saturday (February 17): - The Main Event
at which we distribute the First Annual Howard Awards. The Howards are our Judge's Choice Awards, named in honor of the famous Old Howard Theater, Boston's home of Burlesque for almost 100 years. Not only prestigious, The Howards come with a variety of prizes and honoraria from our generous sponsors.

Sunday (February 18): - TWO DIFFERENT SHOWS!
The first part of the evening is our "Newcomers Showcase" featuring the rising stars of burlesque. Then it's "The Sideshow Ball", where the acts that accompanied classic burlesque – sword swallowing, knife throwing, hula hooping, juggling, and more ! – will really shine.

Download your very own copy of the application from http://www.Burlesque-expo.com/performer-application.pdf (it's a PDF; you'll need Adobe Acrobat to read it).

Hope to see all of you in Boston!

For all of those who are, I wanna try to collaboratively make a movie. I think http://www.jumpcut.comwould be a great place for everyone to upload stuff. If we all put it in the same group, we can use each other's footage. This is also a cool way to share stuff with dd fans who can't make it to the show or who live in different places.

The results could potentially be totally awesome. Thoughts?

DVD Update:
The Dresden Dolls first DVD is coming along great and will probably
be released this fall. Pope is experiencing something close to death
after pulling 45 consecutive all-nighters to get the thing edited.

Sheet Music Update:
AAAGGHGHGHHH. I am still working on the sheet music and guitar tabs
for the songs on the first record. it's going to be a beautiful book.
If you want to add yourself to the pile of names to get notified when
it's done, send an email to emily@dresdendolls.com

Tour Diary:
I have been blogging more than usual. Glastonbury mud, japan, billy
corgan, the perils of trying to be a
touring writer and trent reznor's big exercise ball all make cameo
appearances. Well, it's not all that sensational. but it's a great
way to waste time at work.
weren't able to get tickets to the NIN shows.
We have therefore decided to start a contest in which you can win a
pair of tickets (you plus one guest) to ANY SHOW ON OUR CALENDAR
(including the non-NIN shows) STARTING IN PHILLY ON MAY 18th and
ENDING JUNE 2nd IN MEXICO CITY.
Please Note: This contest is not valid for shows in Chicago, Boston,
Toronto or New York.

One winner (plus guest) will be selected for each city. In the case of
a tie in one city, we will reward a pair of tickets to two people (one
for each night).

What must you do to win? We tried to make this as simple as possible:

Send us a digital picture of a Living Statue (a human being
painted/costumed and posing as a work of art) in front of your local
police station (well, any police station will do,it doesn't HAVE to be
local). We will select our favorite entry from each city.

THE RULES:

-The Living Statue does not have to be yourself. You can con a poor
friend into posing while you photograph.

-The Statue can be in any kind of creative attire, and paint is not a
must. But give it an effort, people.

-We suggest you stay OFF OF THE POLICE PROPERTY. If they come to burn
you, we don't know you.

-We will judge the photos on the following criterea: madness, beauty,
attention to detail and aesthetic balance.

-Creativity wins most points. Work with what God gave you and make
something beautiful.

-We must be able to clearly make out the Police Station in some way in
the photograph. Across the street is acceptable, but not as cool.

-Quality of Photography will not affect our decision, but please no
phone photos. We want to seeeeeeeee.

-Bonus points for cops posing in the photo.

-The deadline for all submissions is May 9th at Midnight.

-The subject of the submission MUST BE THE NAME OF THE CITY IN WHICH
YOU WANT TICKETS. (Example - Subject: Chicago).

-YOU MAY NOT ENTER MORE THAN ONCE WITH THE SAME STATUE. If you want to
enter multiple times, make more statues. This will REALLY confuse
local
law enforcement.

-Your submission must include an attachment of the photo (jpg)

-Your submission must also include your FULL NAME (as it appears on
your ID - you will be asked for your picture ID to claim your
tickets).
You can choose your guest at any time, you'll be put on the list +1.

- Email submissions/questions to: windollstickets@yahoo.com

-The Email address that you send from will be the email address that
we
will use to notify you.

-Deadline for submissions is 11:11 pm Eastern Standard Time on May
9th,
2005.

-We will notify winners at the LATEST by 11:11 pm Eastern Standard
Time
on May 13th, 2005.

We will post all winners on the website in the "couture" of the Closet
(www.dresdendolls.com/closet/couture/index.htm), and will also post
any other submissions we feel must be seen.

NIN was great too.
If you are going tonight and want to get up front get there EARLY. I have never seen a line so long to get in the Fillmore. It stretched almost 3 blocks by the time the doors opened. The Fillmore staff did a great job of getting people in quickly though.

Okay, listen up. This is pretty amazing.

To make a long and beautiful story short, Trent Reznor went to the Dresden Dolls show in San Francisco the night before we played with them, loved the show, and from what Amanda told me especially loved the Dresden Dolls Brigade. We all busted our asses for this show, and all the hard work paid off in a way that we couldn’t have even expected – get this:

Trent has personally offered a few guest list spots to us at each show, specifically for the Brigade and its beautiful performers! As I’m sure you realize, this is enormous for The Dresden Dolls, and it is incredibly important that we live up to the standard the performers set at the S.F. show. I have tons of last second work in front of me, so I’m reaching out to all of you.

The really really important stuff:

This is not a Dresden Dolls show like you know them. This is a Nine Inch Nails show, and therefore the Brigade will have to be a bit different. I need to be incredibly selective in who we let on the list, but if you don’t get on it, it isn’t because we don’t love you with all of our hearts – it’s just that these shows are critical, as I’m sure you understand.

As there are only a few spots, it is very important that we get the ones who will fit these shows the best, and I’m mainly looking at professionalism, costuming (very important), visibility and odd and surreal performances.

The details are as thus, so you have a better idea: There will be a HUGE line, so we would want performers outside about 1/2 hour before doors entertaining them and coming in with the doors opening to continue until The Dresden Dolls go on, which is abut 1.5 hours. Then relax and watch the 45 minute DD set, and after that another 15(ish) minutes of performing and passing out Dresden Dolls CD samplers. We did this at the San Francisco shows, and people were literally lining up for the CD's. (This would be in the lobby area, or close to where they are doing their signing at intermission.) Then, enjoy the NIN show or just hang out. After the show, we would really appreciate it if the performers could then continue handing out the samplers. We like this because it associates the performers with The Dresden Dolls - not to take away from NIN, but this is us and we, and we try to portray a taste of what to expect at a DD show.

There won’t be backstage access, so you will need to get ready at home or in the bathroom at the venue. We did this at the SF show and it was no problem.

Okay, that’s it for now. Please email me at thebrigade@dresdendolls.com with NIN and the city/date of show in the subject line if you have any questions or are interested. Please, do NOT message me on the boards as I don’t want the emails to get lost or forgotten. Thanks!

I love you all,

~ Casey

PS - Sorry that my writing is so bland in this message, I’m kinda tired right now.

Just in the midst of reviewing a cool app that dovetails into Final Cut Pro that allows for live cutting of up to three camera's.

Loosely translated one can edit by pressing 1,2,3 with all the three video streams running at once on the screen. Feels like editing a gig live and a hell of a lot easier than a normal edit.

Reviews almost done, but I've been using the 3 camera footage from the London show.

So I've sent in DVDs of all three camera's to HQ etc, and can do so with edit, but I figure it could be posted/ uploaded somewhere too?

Suggestions?
Those of you in the local area can turn on your radios to catch the
cool sounds, and thanks to the joys of modern streaming audio tech,
those of you outside listening range can enjoy our complete live set
from the comfort of your own sitting room, your sweetie's sitting
room, or a sitting-room at the top of Kilimanjaro (assuming you have
a big enough antenna and a cool enough PDA). You may have missed
our big debut gig in February, but now you can just flip on the ol'
boom-box or wind up the Winamp. We'll play for 45 minutes, or until
The Secret Machines are a great up-and-coming band and they are playing at the Gothic Theater tonight as part of some Jack Daniels thingy.

Last time the Secret Machines came through town they played the Fox in Boulder and almost sold out the show. They are getting alot of good press.

They have been described by others as Pink Floydish, Spiritualized meets Neil Young's crazy horse. I saw them at the Fox show and I thought they were great (light show was awesome), their CD is awesome as well.

Listen to sound clips at http://www.thesecretmachines.com.

The show at the Gothic tonight is a FREE show, but you must have a ticket. It is Ages 21 & Over.

If you want to check them out, email me (blue@sciticketing.com) before 2:30PM today and I will put you on the list to pick up a ticket at willcall. Let me know if you would like 1 or 2 tickets. I will respond to you to confirm.

THE SURPLUS BRIGADE

what ?
we are looking for artists to help make creative merch for the dresden dolls. this includes: making stencils, handpainting/stenciling t-shirts & clothings, sewing stuff, decorating yo-yos, lampshades, frisbees, lunch boxes, music boxes, teacups, children, scissors, copies of "catcher in the rye", etc… to be sold on the web & at local shows. we are hoping to find a core of around 10 people to work collaboratively on ideas, techniques, and creative and weird ways of actually selling this merch.

when ?
starting as close to the beginning of summer as possible, within the first few weeks of may, to continue through the summer. we’ll be looking for someone to keep the surplus brigade alive for the months & years & decades to follow. when we have a group together, we’ll decide on meeting times – a few times a week for a few hours at the very least .

where ?
boston, in the south end, in a space dedicated to this workshop. it is a seven minute walk from the green line and a three minute walk from the orange line. you’ll have to be available all summer, and ideally be in the area year-round.

(the fine print.)
we will operate as a collective co-op. you’ll be paid based on what you make and what we sell. we want to pay you. really, we do. but it’s an experiment, so payment will be possible, but not promised. we will all sit down and figure this out together once the artists are in place.

interested ?
send an email to artificially@gmail.com with the following :
• your name, age, & whether you’ll be around just for the summer or year-round
• your contact information (phone # and email)
• describe any experience you’ve had with this kind of thing before, and any special skills you have. are you awesome at stenciling ? can you silkscreen like no other ? can you paint with your toes ? i want to know.
• an idea for a stencil we could make
• 10 or so items you’d love to see made
[NOTE: we may steal your ideas.]
• 4-5 examples of your artwork

all resumes must be submitted by april 23rd. at midnight.

ALSO !
we need :
• a few big tables
• sewing machines
• glueguns
• silkscreen machines & material
• misc. artwork materials (foam, glass, cardboard, etc)
• any strange bulk items that can be used for merch-making

email me (artificially@gmail.com) if you can donate any of these.

AND !
we are also seeking someone to be the web-master for this division of the dresden dolls website, and that means lots of scanning, digital photography, updating and answering questions that customers may have. if you are the person for this job or know a great, flexible, web designer, let me know. we will probably pay you a flat salary as opposed to a percentage of the merch sold.

questions ?

As you know, We are supporting Nine Inch Nails for all of their US tour dates, and something I would love to have is a huge showing of Dresden Dolls fans at the shows.

Normally, we gather a handful of people to do amazing, beautiful, creative things, and if you didn’t know it by now, these people are called “The Dresden Dolls Brigade”, and we usually are able to have some spots on the guest list for them. With the NIN, Coachella, and Bonaroo shows however, things are a tiny bit different - mainly, there is no guest list for us, at all.

You might see that as a bad thing, but I like to look at it this way; Now, as far as I’m concerned, any Dresden Dolls fan who is able to get tickets for these shows and wants to show their support – in even the smallest way – IS a part of The Brigade.

We would LOVE to have your presence there, as you know how
special Dresden Dolls shows are, and The Brigade helps give them that
extra magic that Amanda & Brian work their sweet asses off to create for us.
Dress up, pass out things, do impromptu performances, decorate the place with flowers when you get in the doors – and invite all of your friends who are fans of The Dresden Dolls to do the same. The more people who are there showing their support for The Dresden Dolls, the more fun it will be for all of us, and trust me – Amanda and Brian notice, and absolutely love it. You can even get dressed up AT the show, creating a performance out of that!

So, it pretty much comes down to this: You need to get a ticket, and
as soon as you can, as they will sell out pretty quickly. Find out when they go on sale where you are – this is a good place to find out: http://www.nin.com/tour/index.html

Our hands are tied so we can't do much but appreciate the hell out of you
this time, and shower you with love and admiration, (and hey - that's
not so bad, is it?) but we may be able to do something special for you
in the future. Maybe give you a cool sticker, buy you an ice cream cone, or tell you that your shoe laces are untied, so you don’t fall and hurt yourself.

If you’re able to make any of the NIN/DD shows, and want to decorate the place with your beauty and/or talent, please send me an email *with the CITY in the subject line* to thebrigade@dresdendolls.com , just so I know who you are for future reference, and, perhaps, eventually get you that ice cream cone.

lovelovelove, and LONG LIVE PUNK ROCK CABARET!

Your adoring Ringmaster
~ Casey

As things in DD land grow and expand we find it more and more difficult to keep track of everything just by counting on our fingers and toes. Because of this we've decided to create a database of our illustrious performers from around the world.

So if you think you might ever want to be apart of The Brigade again, we'd love to have you fill out the stuff below and send it to thebrigade@dresdendolls.com - it'll only take a minute and will really help us.

Also, if you could forward this along to any of the folks you know who performed with you in your town we'd really appreciate it. We were only able to collect but so many email addresses and we wouldn't want to leave anyone out!

Hey all,

I'm currently recruiting performers/brigaders for the band's Jan. and Feb. run. This includes the following cities:

Tempe
Santa Barbara
Sacramento
San Jose
New Haven
Philadelphia
Providence
Portland, ME

We'd love to have any and all levels of help. This ranges from living statues, to decorating, to professional burlesque acts.

As usual, our stipulations are:

--No fire inside the club (in fact, no fire outside of venues either unless
approved by me and the city fire marshal)
--No on-stage acts
--All performers must be approved by me beforehand

Otherwise, go nuts with your creativity!! Please contact me with ideas and inquiries.

See you all soon!

PS--If you've contacted me already, don't worry, i haven't forgotten. I'll be sending out more details shortly......

I have a feeling that the "A is For Accident" CDs on the Important Records site will soon be gone. They are selling the very first pressing of the CD which is the only version containing "Stand By Your Man" and is increasingly rare. Right now it is only $9.99 but I have seen it on eBay before for over $50. I would grab these up while the getting is good. Please pass this on to your fellow Dolls fans so we can all own this before the price goes through the roof....
For now I would love for everyone to introduce themselves.

I'm a recent transplant from Boston to the Bay Area. I first started listening to the dolls back when they were playing at amanda's house last summer for those big crazy parties. I miss checking out their shows now that I'm out west, but I did get to see them on New Years at Axis and even sing with them for Delilah and The Jeep Song! It fucking rocked the house.
Now my goal is to convince them to hurry up and tour California.

EGO PLUM’S EBOLA MUSIC ORCHESTRA and STOLEN BABIES will be performing musical tributes to the soundtrack Danny Elfman made famous.

Hey everyone, hope you all have had a great weekend.
There are lots of exciting things happening for The
Dresden Dolls these days, check it out...

---
The Dolls are nominated for a "Woodie" award at
mtvu.com. Great name for an award, eh? The category
the nomination is in is called Left Field. Here is
the description they give for that particular
category:

(Most Original Artist) These artists came out of
nowhere and surprised us so much we still have no idea
what section the record store to look for them in.
Frankly, who cares? This is the most unique,
genre-busting talent of the year and we're ready to
celebrate them in all their unclassifiable glory.

The Dolls clearly deserve to win this category.
Please vote as much as possible on this as mtvU
encourages this and other bands fans will be doing so
as well. Here is the direct link to vote:

http://www.mtvu.com/music/woodie_awards/index_poll.jhtml?woodieCat=leftfield
----
The Dolls have been nominated for five Boston Music
Awards:

Best Local Debut Album of the Year
Best Local Song of the Year ("Coin-Operated Boy")
Best Live Act
Best Local Rock/Pop Band
Best Local Female Vocalist.

They've also been nominated for the "People's Choice
Award".
Please help us win that coveted Golden Baked Bean.

Vote at:
http://www.nemoboston.com/bma/vote.html

Upon successfully voting you will get an email sent to
you thanking you for participating. Please save and
forward all these emails to dresden_dolls@yahoo.com.
When voting ends I will select 3 email addresses at
random and mail each winner a Dolls prize package
----
If you have mtvU on your campus you can request the
Dolls video for Coin-Operated Boy at the following
link:

http://www.mtvu.com/music/request_video/

Even if you don't have mtvU requests taken there spill
over to m2 and increase your likelihood of seeing the
video :)
